What is Kalmegh ?

Kalmegh is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family. The traditional tribe of Kerala in India is attributed to the cultivation of this herb. The herb can grow up to 3.5 feet and is extremely bitter.

How and where is Kalmegh cultivated?

It grows abundantly in Asian countries like India , Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Java, Malaysia and Indonesia. In India it is commonly known as Kalmegh mainly found in the plains of the country and is one of the commonly used medicinal plants in Ayurvedic and Unani systems of Kalmegh is a hardy plant which can be grown in all types of Soils, therefore its commonly available, and grows extensively like a shrub. The increase in demand of this shrub has motivated its cultivation in many parts now. The plant is found primarily in South East Asia and is a native to India

Kalmegh has a long four sided stalk, with purplish flowers and pointed leaves. The flowering and fruiting goes on till December before it gets cold. The plant can be germinated through seeds or by stalks.

What are the medicinal uses of Age Ayurveda Kalmegh ?

Out of the many medicinal properties of Kalmegh the two that stand out are its qualities as a liver stimulator and immunity booster.

By balancing pitta in the blood and the liver, Kalmegh enhances the liver function, which in turn stimulates bile. It protects the liver against damages caused by free radicals owing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Studies indicate that the active principle “Andrographolide” has shown notable results in activities such as hepatoprotective, anti-ulcer, antipyretic. It is used to reduce toxic effect created due to jaundice. It has and also shown remarkable results in upper respiratory tract infections.

In a clinical study by Chaturvedi et al. (1983) notable results were seen for example a remarkable reduction in serum bilirubin, and significant improvements in the levels of ALP, SGPT and SGOT.

Kalmegh as an immunity booster has been used for a long time due to its antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Kalmegh was widely credited for arresting the 1919 Indian flu epidemic, other than that kalmegh reduces severity of cold symptoms.
