INGREDIENT AND THEIR PROPERTIES

BRAHMI- is a sanskrit word derived from “Bhagwan Brahma” or “Brahman”. Bhagwan Brahma is the divinity responsible for all of the creative forces in the world and Brahman is the Hindu name given to the universal consciousness. Brahmi literally means the energy (or “Shakti”) of Brahma, consequently brahmi has a lot to offer to the medical world.

Brahmi is a miracle herb used in neurological and psychiatric disorders. In Ayurveda brahmi is used as a brain tonic which rejuvenates the mind and improves brain performance.  Its usage for thousands of years stands testimony to its efficacy and safety. Western medicine have limited therapeutic options in certain neurological disorders, so they are increasingly taking help of Brahmi as an effective and safer alternative.

The consumption of Brahmi in vedic texts points out it’s ability to awaken your chakras, which may be understood in the modern way as a balance between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. In doing so you realise “Sat Chit Ananda” which translates into “existence” “Conciousness” and “Bliss”. Therefore this Sattvic herb aids and assists you to give up addictions of all kind, incuding sugar, alchohol and drug abuse.

Nootropic effect of this herb has been known for centuries. Many researches have been conducted in recent times to confirm its properties as, an anti-oxidant, antispasmodic, adaptogenic, cardio tonic, alterative, astringent, diuretic, , analgesic, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and antiepileptic agent. This makes it useful in the following conditions:

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s:

Brahmi contains active compounds called bacosides, which have been shown to have antioxidant effects which neutralize free radicals and thus be useful in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Memory and brain function

Several studies have been conducted which point to three common observations, that Brahmi improves memory, rate of processing visual information and therefore the health of the brain.

ADHD

ADHD creates hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness in a person, tests have revealed significant results on all three conditions.

Dementia, Autism, Insomnia and Depression.

Brahmi is known to balance and rejuvenate Pitta, while, diminishing elevated Kapha. It enhances the quality of Sadhaka pitta which directly influences the nature of consciousness. It can balance Vata if taken in proper doses or with other anti-vata herbs. It aids in the recovery from exhaustion, stress, debility and aggravation of vata. It helps in all conditions with a deficient Majja dhatu; hence it is used in dementia, autism, insomnia and depression.

Diabetes, Heart and Kidney diseases.

Brahmi shows potent Anti- inflammatory qualities as it suppresses some of the molecules which aid in inflammation. Many chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart and kidney diseases including cancer, are a result of chronis inflammation.

Vedic texts written by Vaidyas and Scholars have documented the role of Brahmi as follows: promoting Medhya (intellect), Ayushya (longevity), Rasayana (rejuvenation), Prajnasaktivardhana (intellectual power), Majjadhaty Rasayana (nervous system rejuvenation), Balya (strength, especially mind), Jivaniya (life energy), Nidrajanana (sleep), Dhana (wealth),  Anuloma (redirecting the flow of vata downwards). Over the centuries, the role of Brahmi in the treatment of Vatahara (vata), Unmadahara (mental illness), Unmada (insanity), Alaksmi (inauspiciousness), Apasmar and Manasavikara (mental disorders) has been well described. Brahmi was used specifically in mental diseases like insanity and epilepsy,

Shankhpushpi– is a perennial herb known for its medicinal benefits. Ayurveda, chronicles Shankhpushpi actions as an herb that helps to calm the brain, by relieving stress and anxiety. As a Medhya Rasayana, it enhances memory by acting as a brain tonic, while invigorating intellect. This helps in increasing concentration while providing improved brain functions. All these activities for a better mental health becomes crucial in addressing depression in patients.

Shankhpushpi improves concentration and attention span in children suffering from ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) due to its Medhya (improves intelligence) property.

Bhringraj- means “Ruler of the hair”. Taking Bhringraj powder helps in the management of cholesterol levels due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also protects the liver cells against damage caused by free radicals due to its hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties. Bhringraj contains variety of molecules such as Eclipta alba, also known as Eclipta prostrata, the pharmacological action of this molecule is analgesic, and also as a memory enhancer. Brahmi also contains phytosterol, β-amyrin, triterpenes such as ecalbatin, echinocystic acid, ursolic acid, flavones such as Luteolin and coumarin such as wedelolactone. Phytochemically, Eclipta alba is rich in wedeoloctone, β- amyrin, stigmasterol and luteolin-7- glucoside. Traditionally, being used as a memory modulator.
